What are Headaches?

A headache is a common condition that involves pain or discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck. While many headaches are short-lived and harmless, others can be persistent, painful, and disruptive—especially for athletes and active individuals. In a sports medicine setting, headaches may be related to physical activity, muscle tension, concussion, or underlying joint and nerve issues. Understanding the type of headache is key to effective treatment and prevention.

What are the Causes of Headaches?

Headaches can be triggered by a wide range of factors. In athletes and physically active individuals, common causes include:

  • Muscle tension in the neck, shoulders, and upper back (tension headaches)
  • Dehydration or electrolyte imbalance from strenuous activity
  • Concussions or head injuries from contact sports
  • Poor posture or biomechanics during exercise
  • TMJ dysfunction or jaw clenching under stress
  • Exertional headaches caused by intense physical activity
  • Migraines, which can be triggered by stress, light sensitivity, or sleep disruption

Identifying the root cause is crucial for developing a targeted treatment plan.

How are Headaches Diagnosed?

Diagnosis begins with a detailed medical history and physical exam. Our sports medicine team evaluates headache patterns, location, severity, and triggers. We assess for signs of tension, musculoskeletal dysfunction, or past trauma—such as concussions—that may contribute to symptoms. In some cases, imaging studies or referrals to neurology may be necessary to evaluate and manage headache syndromes. Our goal is to distinguish between primary headaches (like tension or migraines) and secondary headaches caused by injuries such as concussions or neck injuries.

How are Headaches Treated?

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and the individual’s needs. At our sports medicine practice, we focus on nonsurgical, evidence-based care, including:

  • Manual therapy and physical therapy
  • Postural correction and ergonomic training
  • Hydration and nutrition counseling
  • Migraine management with lifestyle changes and, if needed, medication guidance
  • Concussion care including rest, gradual return-to-play, and cognitive support
  • Trigger identification and stress management techniques

When headaches are related to sports injuries or overuse, we work closely with patients to modify training and prevent recurrence.

Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a professional athlete, headaches shouldn’t hold you back. With the right diagnosis and personalized treatment plan, lasting relief is possible.
